The Cerrado Mineiro encompasses a diverse landscape of grassy savannahs, scrublands, and forests, hosting an impressive array of biodiversity with over 10,000 plant species and 800 bird species. As the largest woodland savannah in South America, spanning over 2 million square kilometres – three times the size of Texas – it constitutes a significant 21% of Brazil’s total land area. However, since the 1960s, agricultural expansion has encroached upon the region, with over 40% of its original landmass converted for agricultural use. Coffee cultivation has been a staple for over four decades, with more than 3,000 farms dotting the landscape, primarily smallholder plots. Renowned for its pronounced and refined acidity, Cerrado coffee stands as a testament to the region’s coffee-growing prowess.
